📢 Let's talk about bias and the perception of Executive Women of color as "intimidating." As an executive, I've had my fair share of encounters where my presence was labeled as such, and it's time we address this misconception.
💪🏾 Being told that I'm intimidating in a good way left me contemplating the true meaning behind this term. Intimidation inherently carries a negative connotation, suggesting a sense of fear or unease. As leaders, we should aim to inspire and motivate, not evoke fear. So, how do we bridge this gap?
✨ It's essential to understand that there is a clear distinction between being intimidated by someone's presence and that person being genuinely intimidating. The former stems from our own insecurities, biases, or discomfort, while the latter implies intentionally inflicting fear or distress. Let's debunk the stereotype that charismatic and strong leaders of colour are inherently intimidating.
🌍 To create a more inclusive and empowering environment, we must all take responsibility for self-regulation in the presence of charismatic and strong leaders. Here are a few ways we can achieve this:
1️⃣ Reflect on unconscious biases: Recognize that preconceived notions and stereotypes can cloud our judgment. Challenge your assumptions and actively seek to dismantle biases by embracing diversity and inclusion.
2️⃣ Active listening: Engage in open and authentic conversations with leaders of color. Listen attentively, acknowledge their perspectives, and show empathy. Understanding their experiences will foster a more harmonious and collaborative work culture.
3️⃣ Promote transparency and feedback: Establish an atmosphere where feedback is encouraged and welcomed. By providing constructive feedback, we can help leaders refine their approaches, ensuring their impact aligns with their intentions.
4️⃣ Mentorship and sponsorship: Support and uplift rising executives of color by serving as mentors and sponsors. By fostering their growth and showcasing their talents, we can collectively reshape the narrative surrounding their leadership styles.
5️⃣ Educate and cultivate cultural intelligence: Embrace continuous learning about different cultures and backgrounds. By broadening our perspectives and appreciating diverse leadership styles, we can foster an environment that values and celebrates differences.
🙌 It's time to redefine the perception of Executive Women of color as intimidating and embrace their strength, passion, and unique contributions. Together, let's foster an inclusive environment where everyone's talents can thrive, regardless of their background.
